| New Jersey has always had it's place in dance music. Most notedly due to it's close proximity to Manhattan and being the state between NYC and Philadelphia , getting some of the best of both worlds. As the 70's waned and the 80's dawned , a different style of dance music was beginning to emerge from cities like Newark , the Oranges , Cherry Hill. A sound incorporating more soulful and gospel-tinged vocals and instrumentation. A melodic style with jazzy vibes. And with the emergence of Club Zanzibar and it's most prolific DJ , TONY HUMPHRIES , it wouldn't be long before the 'Jersey Sound' was incarnated.Producers like Paul Simpson , and Artist like Colonol Abrahms musically contributed much , to the sounds Blue Print. As the years progressed and music labeled "House" took hold , outfits such as Blaze , Smack Backroom Productions (and many others) would have no problem injecting their Jerseyesque style into the next dance wave , and the Jersey sound would start to get labeled 'Garage'.Cuts you'll find here , are from late 80's and early 90's and are known by many as Jersey Garage classics.Selections found here , are amongst those that firmly planted New Jersey on the map as a dance music genre. |
